In ancient Rome and in all its empire, power exalted own its importance by buiding triumphal arches, conceived to appear in front of the masses like an eternal frame to the victories of the man-god: the emperor.
The ceremony dea triumph lasts just a few days, but the arch prolongs the memory for centuries, together with the works of poets and historians.
Triumphal arches constitute a typical element of Roman architecture. These structures while having an autonomous functional value as a gate, have a monumental and commemorative character. The emperor, returning victorious from the campaigns, was honoured solemnly by building a symbolical victory arch, under which the conqueror marched with the treasures and the slaves, the war booty, along the traditional route of the Via Sacra.

At present you can see in the Roman Forum the triumphal arches of emperors Titus, Septimius Severus, and Costantine, You can also precisely determine the foundations of the arches dedicated to two other great emperors: Augustus and Trajan.
