Originally there were eighteen gates in the Aurelian Wall; some of which are still present in their original shape; others were modified during the Renaissance and Baroque periods; and some were almost destroyed.
The originals: Porta Asinara, Porta S. Sebastiano (ancient Porta Appia), Porta Latina, Porta S. Paolo (ancient Porta Ostiense), Porta Pinciana, Porta Tiburtina.
Gates substantially modified: Porta Flaminia (present Porta del Popolo) and Porta Portuensis (now substituted by Porta Portense).
