Family

With the name familia the Romans meant a group of people and things that are under the parental authority of the father; it was broadened to the property, lands, objects, servants and any other freeman who were under him.
The primitive Roman pater familias and patres were the only patricians. He was the head of a number of people who acknowledged him as the founder of the family and as the master; founder of the family for his sons and his decendants grouped in patriarchal family living in the same house or at least on the same estate; master of his servants and of the others family properties.
