Tullius Ostilius
After the death of Numa, (according to tradition) a Roman, Tullius Ostilius
was elected king.
During his reign from 672 to 640 b.C., Rome fought several wars against the nearby
people.
The most important was the war against the town of Alba, caused by reciprical damages
along the borders of both countries.
During that war, while the troops were fighting, it was suggested that the conflict was
to be fought between champions coming from the two towns. The winner would
have allowed his town to subdue the other.
That was the origin of the legendary duel between the three Curatii and three
Oratii which ended with the victory of the Oratii. Consequently Alba was submitted
and sometime later destroyed.
Among the Albans taken to Rome, the members of the principal families were given
Roman citizenship while the others, plebeians, had no rights.
