Claudius
In 41 A.D., Claudius Caligula's nephew was elected emperor. He ruled wisely and
chose good collaborators among his freedmen. He won over Britain and Mauritania
increasing his prestige. The conquest of Britain gave him great honour because he
succeded where Caesar had failed. After his victory he was given the title of British.
His name is linked to great public works: aquaduct, the artificial port of Ostia and the
baths. He was not lucky in his private life, his third wife Messalina was an immoral
woman and he repudiated her, and married Agrippina. She wanted Claudius to adopt
her son Nero. Having obtained this favor and sure that her son would become emperor, it seems that she poisoned
Claudius in 54 a. C..
